What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is a group of chronic disorders that impairs control of movement that appears in the first few years of life and generally do not worsen over time. These disorders are caused by ill-development or damage to motor areas in the brain that disrupts the brain's ability to control movement and posture. dictionary.com states that Cerebral Palsy (CB) is defined as a form of paralysis believed to be caused by a prenatal brain defect or by brain injury during birth, most marked in certain motor areas and characterized by difficulty in control of the voluntary muscles.

The Cerebral part of the word Cerebral Palsy refers to the brain. The palsy part refers to the muscle and its poor control. Cerebral Palsy causes spasms within the body and interferes with the brain. It usually occurs and develops when the fetus is in the mother's uterus. Although its conditions do not get worse or progress, this disorder is unfortunately not curable. Therapy can help cope and pull through the disease to make it better.

Symptoms/Signs

The signs and symptoms of Cerebral Palsy begin to be more
noticeable as the child develops its body systems, the signs include:
  • Delayed head motion
  • Delayed walking
  • Delayed of sitting with support
  • Abnormal muscle tone
  • Skeletal deformities
  • Joint contractures
  • Mental retardation
  • Seizures

                                    Causes

The causes of Cerebral Palsy are quite simple.
Brain damage is the result of this disorder and causes are:

  • Failure of brain development
  • Neurological damage to the brain
  • Injury of the the brain before, during, or shortly after birth
  • Inadequate oxygen
  • Prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal factors
  • Many disorders can also be a cause such as thyroid or seizure disorder.

Treatment

There are several treatments one that has Cerebral Palsy can go through.
Each one contains a form of working the mental, physical and social :

  • Physical Therapy
  • Special equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, ect.
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Any other physical contact and restrain
